The fictional setting of Paradise is envisioned as a dazzling castle surrounded by lush tropical gardens, and the king entertains himself with a richly-colored bird. Outside the castle, in the garden, a black jealous bird dreams of being treated like a bird with rich feathers. But it found that free skies and nature were irresistible to the king when he was surrounded by a cage with beautifully feathered birds. Paradise's core themes of freedom and equality wouldn't be impressive if Patel didn't obsessively use a lot of tricks. The film uses backlighting, traditional celluloid animation, decoupage, and multiple exposure photography to achieve this result. Paradise is an award-winning film from Los Angeles to Hamilton to St Annes to Melbourne.

The

Born in Jalsan, India in 1942, Ishu Patel graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Baroda. He joined NFB (National Film Board of Canada) in 1970, during time in NFB, he created a large number of experimental animation works with clay, beads, cardboard and other materials and techniques ,his talents are often used to create those very special stop-motion animations. These works focus on issues such as environmental protection and war, and are full of humanitarian concerns and strong moral teachings.

Award-winning filmmaker Ishu Patel, internationally recognized for his innovations in animation technique, had an ambition as a child in India to enter Norman McLaren's National Film Board of Canada (NFB) to work in his own animations. Of course many kids have his dreams, but Patel's perseverance and his talent put his dreams within reach.

Patel joined the NFB in 1970 and studied at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India, National Institute of Design in India  Ahmedabad, and Allgemeine Gewerbeschule in Switzerland. In 1968 he was awarded a Rockefeller Scholarship while studying in the United States, but it was delayed until he could go to the NFB.

Many of Patel's films have repeatedly won top honors at prestigious film festivals. For example, the film The Bead Game (1978) was nominated for a British Academy Award and an Oscar; the film Afterlife (1978) won the Canadian National Film Award and the Grand Prix of St Anne's; the film Top Priority (1981) recurred periodically in Poland, Germany, Portugal and Italy. The film Paradise (1984) won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival (1985), won first prize at the Los Angeles International Animation Film Festival (1985) and was nominated for an Oscar (1985).

Patel, who strives to break new ground, maintains a constant struggle with himself. In the fantasy film Paradise, he used a bunch of techniques to create deep holograms. In his last film, Divine Fate (1993), he interrogated the human souls struggling in the physical world. As part of the NFB's Beyond program, he ditched the animation studio to work with inter-artists in Cape Dorse in the high latitude arctic, as well as with Ghanaian public health workers in West Africa.

Ishu Patel has co-produced animations with Japan's NHK and British BBC Channel 4, and he has contributed more than 100 lifelike films in French to CBC. In 1998 he joined the Department of Animation and Digital Arts at the USC School of Cinematic Arts to teach experimental animation and production. In 2001, he continued his project and gave up teaching.
